Life Insurance for People with Disabilities

It is not just the type of disability that can play an important role in how much you are charged for a policy. Simply put – the healthier you are – the better.

The degree of your disability and any additional health related factors should be considered on an individual by individual basis.  The determination and underwriting requirements are based on these underwriting criteria and the medical information they receive following your medical exam.

Additionally, the insurance company may require and request additional medical reports from other doctors or hospitals that have consulted or participated in your treatment.

Some Other Rating Considerations

If your disability has no correlation or influence on your lifespan and you are able to function almost as normally as any other individual then you could very possibly qualify for a policy for at least standard rates. The premiums increase proportionally to how negatively the disability impacts your life or reduces your life span.

Life Threatening Disabilities

Some disabilities are such that they will result in early death and some insurers will not even cover certain types of disabilities or disabilities which are more severe. For those in this situation you will need special help in finding the right form of life insurance policy and insurer to provide you with coverage as there are still some options available.

Your options in finding coverage for those with more serious disabilities include:

  • High Risk Insurers – There are life insurance companies which specialize in issuing policies to those who have a high risk disability.
  • Use an Independent Agent – Always use an independent agent such as myself as high risk health situations is something I specialize. Independent agents can access numerous companies and can assist you in discussing your options and offer advice for your particular situation.  Make sure the agent is knowledgeable about high risk disabilities.
  • Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance – This is a type of policy that is very suitable for people who has a serious health threatening disability and is available to everyone. The bonus is that there is not medical exam required. This type of policy is more expensive and the policy limits are much lower but it may suit your purpose.
  • Critical Life Insurance – This is a specialized form of coverage and some insurers require that you take a medical exam and some do not.

The point is that the best way to find the best coverage at the best possible premiums for your particular disability is to spend some time shopping around.  This is why an independent agent is your best option to find what you need because there are policies available for everybody and an agent such as myself knows where to look.
